Bayern Munich will be hoping to test the title credentials of RB Leipzig when they visit the Red Bull Arena this Saturday. This top-of-the-table meeting promises to deliver some high intensity action. RB Leipzig have been in stupendous form thanks to the brilliance of Timo Werner, who has been scoring for fun in this early part of the campaign.
Niko Kovac’s men have been able to overcome the departure of some key players rather well. Coutinho and Robert Lewandowski have been able to dominate the pitch for the defending champions. Even though Coutinho has not been 100% fit since he made the switch to Bayern, the international break would have helped him recuperate to a great extent. Lewandowski is the only player to keep Werner in check, as he has been able to get six goals already. The Polish international has been enjoying his football after recently extending his contract with Bayern.
Coutinho showed flashes of his quality against Mainz 05. His lack of fitness was the reason for not completing the 90 minutes. The Brazilian is likely to play from the start against the table leaders.
Leipzig are aware that the visit of Bayern is a serious threat to the club’s 100% record so far. The club have been very miserly at the back with only two goals conceded. At the other end, Werner’s form has been helpful to destroy opposition with ease.
Bayern may have picked up the title last season, but there was plenty of inconsistency from Kovac’s men throughout the campaign. Fans’ expectation will be for a game that is a repeat of the DFB Pokal final from last season. However, the opponents are much improved compared to last season. After taking charge in June, Julian Nagelsmann has been able to revolutionize Leipzig. After having achieved a lot of success with Hoffenheim, it is easy to see the respect that the new coach commands from his players.
Despite the strong start, there are a few disadvantages among this Leipzig team that Bayern can exploit. An area where Nagelsmann’s team struggle is trying to get out of trouble when being pressed high up the pitch. This is especially apparent when the midfield boasts of technical players who are capable of passing with aplomb. Bayern have this strength and the team only needs to focus heavily on pressing high up the pitch. If devoid of time to think, Leipzig can make a mistake and players like Lewandowski and Coutinho only need an invitation to exploit the same.
Leipzig attack with numbers in the wide position. This can be effective against teams that are mediocre in quality, but it may not work against an opposition like Bayern. Leipzig struggled especially in the game against Monchengladbach and the tactics used by Marc Rose’s side will be a great lesson for Kovac.
RB Leipzig – The hosts will be without Adams and Wolf. Upamecano, Kampl, and Schick are doubtful with injuries.
Bayern Munich – Goretzka is the only player missing for Kovac’s men.
