Manuel Neuer was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world not too long ago, but the Bayern Munich captain has not been enjoying a great spell over the last two seasons. A string of injuries has seen him failed to hit the impeccable standards that he has set at the back for the Bavarians. The number of injuries has been so substantial that Neuer has featured in less than 30 league games over the last three campaigns and this happens to be the 33-year-old’s worst run in the last decade.
There are even rumours about Neuer calling time on his career at this early stage owing to the frequency of injuries. Yet, the captain came back rejuvenated to help Bayern lift the DFB Pokal last season.
Neuer has featured in three pre-season games for Bayern Munich and he appears to be slowly gaining his confidence back. A major part of his confidence is down to the lack of any pain after a sizeable period. Speaking to the Bundesliga’s official site, Neuer said:
“I feel really good right now, I’m not in any pain and can take part in everything we’re doing. I’m really looking forward to the new season.”
A number of goalkeepers have tried to copy the trend set by Neuer by helping the team play out from the back. However, the impressive technical ability of the German international makes him the undisputed king in this regard.
Meanwhile, Bayern boss Niko Kovac has not been completely reliant on the experienced names in the squad. Youngster Jann-Fiete Arp has featured in a handful of games and it would not be a surprise to see the policy retained even in the competitive games. Bayern are going through a transitional period following the departure of several key players like Frank Ribery, Mats Hummels, and Arjen Robben. The club’s attempts to bring in replacements have not exactly been fruitful so far.
Bayern have to act fast to make signings even if the new campaign is a few weeks away. Since the Bundesliga transfer window closes only on September 2, there is still time to make an impact in the window.
A few days ago, Kovac revealed that the club are working extremely hard to sign a ‘dream player’, who happens to be Manchester City’s Leroy Sane. City boss Pep Guardiola appeared to not care too much about Sane’s departure a few weeks ago, but the Premier League champions are now growing concerned as talks about a new deal have stalled. Sane only has two years left on his contract and he is extremely concerned about losing his first-team spot.
The failure to feature regularly in the forthcoming campaign could have a significant consequence with regard to Sane’s ability to feature for Germany at the Euro 2020. Meanwhile, a move to Bayern will significantly boost his chances since there are only two natural wingers at the Allianz Arena. Sane would undoubtedly be an expensive acquisition, but the 23-year-old has the potential to become the next Ribery or Robben.
So far, Bayern’s transfer activity has largely been to shore up the defence with the signings of Luca Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard.
