Bayern Munich are increasingly turning their attention towards Manchester City’s Leroy Sane. The 23-year-old is reportedly fast losing his place as a first-team regular in the mind of Pep Guardiola, who has multiple options in this position with the likes of Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez. Sane made the switch to Manchester City in 2016 for around £37 million.
However, he is widely believed to be unsettled at Etihad Stadium after losing his first-team spot in the second half of last season. Sane has a contract with City only for the next two years and the league champions have been actively trying to tie him down on a new contract. Sane is clearly in a position of strength and he is looking to consider his options with Bayern Munich actively in the market for a new winger, according to The Sun.
The summer is bringing out massive changes at the Allianz Arena with the club seeing the departure of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery – two players who have been the mainstay in Bayern’s wing over the last decade. Aside from the void caused by the departure of two players, there is also a strong desire amongst Bayern supporters to return to the top once again.
Despite winning the league title for a seventh consecutive season, Bayern have been left disappointed when it comes to performances in Europe, where it matters most. Last season, the club were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 round – their worst performance since the 2010-11 campaign.
After struggling to establish himself in his first season, Sane was extremely influential in City’s first league title under Guardiola back in the 2017-18 campaign. The German made 49 appearances in all competitions and contributed 14 goals. Yet, his presence in the first team rapidly went down in the second half of last season. However, the return of 16 goals in 47 appearances means that Sane has just been able to witness his best campaign as a professional.
City will be demanding a huge price for the winger, who has a lot of football ahead of him. Bayern have a greater affinity to go for the German international, who has featured in 21 matches for the national team. Three of his five international goals have come in this calendar year. After picking up five major honours with Manchester City, Sane may prefer a return back to his homeland – especially after falling out of favour with Guardiola.
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has tried to cool down the rumours, but it may be difficult and Bayern bring in a replacement for Robben and Ribery. If City are unwilling to take the negotiations further, Bayern may switch their attention to Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele. The French international could be sold to fund the new acquisition of Antoine Griezmann, who has made the switch from Atletico Madrid for just over £100 million. If the transfer goes through, Dembele would be returning to Germany for the first time since leaving Borussia Dortmund for €105 million in 2017.
